December 2008

It has been such a nice break so far. Nothing much has been going on, it’s great! Grant has been home, as the team had a week off for Christmas, and I have been able to get things done around the house. On Christmas, Grant and I opened gifts. It was a small Christmas this year, but one of the things I got was a gift certificate to get my hair done (Tuesday is the day!) and I got Grant a blanket. He loves these Vellux blankets. I call them hotel blankets because they are always the blanket between the quilt and the sheets at hotels. Nothing exciting about them…I even think they feel almost like foam, but Grant loves them.

Then we had breakfast, watched  a movie and went over to Allison and Dan’s house for dinner. We sat around and had cocktails, played board games (Note: Do not buy anyone the ESPN sports trivia game–it’s impossible to get any of the answers right!!).  Allison and I got dinner ready (ham, squash, green beans, rolls, mashed potatoes), and then we all went downstairs to play the Wii they got their kids for Christmas. Umm, American Idol anyone?

Don’t the husbands look entertained? And this game is particularly fun after an entire evening of cocktails!

We had a great time. The next morning, Grant and I went out to breakfast at this nice place called Magnolia’s. It reminds me of a place that you would find in Eugene. It’s tucked away in an alley and is in a building with offices in it. But when you walk in the front door, you go down a flight of stairs and you’re in this cute bistro. The food was pretty good!

Today, we finally got to painting the entry in our house. It’s the last bit of wall space in our entire house that hasn’t been covered with a new coat of paint. The high ceilings…

are a pain!!! I’m standing at the top of the stairs taking this picture and I still couldn’t get a shot to include the ceiling. The walls are so high right here, which is nice (architecturally), but is a hassle to paint. We have ladders and paint brush extenders, but still…you can tell we are not done (white primer at the top of the photo) because Grant had to leave to go to practice, but when he gets home we will finish it. I’ve been looking at light fixtures to replace the hideous 1970s throwback that’s up right now, but haven’t found one I absolutely love. And eventually, I’d like to get a new front door. Grant has taken the oak wood framing down from around the door to re-stain to match the rest of the wood trim in our house. The banisters will eventually need to be replaced to match, as well.  A home owner’s work is never done!

This weekend was fun! Apart from what came to almost 2 feet of snow being dumped on us, this weekend was a good one. And one comment about the snow that fell on Friday…It was the prettiest I’ve ever seen! It was so sparkly, it looked like glitter was falling from the sky and was piling up everywhere! At first, I thought it was just something I thought of, but going to the Christmas parties this weekend, other people said the same thing! I guess it was because it was so cold (5*) it was like extra-frozen snowflakes. I wanted to get a picture, but I wouldn’t be able to capture the sparkliness of it all. Anyway…

Friday night was the athletic director’s party. With the weather being so bad, me, Grant, Sarah (a co-worker) piled into the Lloyd’s s.u.v and Kwame got us all there safely. We hung around the food tables and ate and talked. Usually that party is packed because the entire department goes, but this year about 1/3 of the crowd was there because of the weather. So we snacked. Talked. Drank. Snacked. Drank. Drank. Talked.

Saturday was “chill around the house day.” Grant continued his progress on the basement and we watched tv and hung out. Although it was sunny, it was too cold to go outside. That night, we stopped by another co-worker’s Christmas party. We didn’t really know other people there except for a couple of other co-workers, so we hung out at the food table and snacked. Talked. Drank. Talked. Drank. Snacked. Snacked. Then went home.

Sunday, we went to church, then went over to the Lloyd’s house for lunch and fun in the snow! The Shepherds were there too and we talked. Ate. Drank. Ate. Talked. And had a great time! Grant had never been sledding before…This has always amazed me.  You lived in Michigan and never went sledding?!?!?!?? So we had to cross that off his list!

I think he had a good time. After just going down the hill a couple times, he was brave enough to be standing on the sled and “snowboarding” down! I’m like, who is this guy?!  It was great.

I had so much fun, even minus the snow pants and snow boots…what was I thinking not bringing those with me that afternoon?!  Don’t worry, the frost bite is only on a few spots of my legs.

Thanks, Julie, for taking such wonderful pictures! All in all, it was a full, wonderful weekend with friends and loved ones!

Ya, I know, I missed hilarious hump day this week. But I’ve just been so busy with work that I’ve been working through most of my lunch hours, so that leaves no time to post.

Grant and I finally got our Christmas tree this week…I think this might be the latest I’ve ever gotten one except one year in middle school, my family got one on xmas eve…what the point of having one when we waited that late is beyond me. But Grant and I got one and decorated it, and I got a picture of my man in front of the tree

Lol. Sexy, sexy. And Grant finished tearing down the wierd wall in the basement and it looks so much better already! So open! Yes, there is still a lot to do, but it will be great when it’s done

You can pretty much see what the before and after is on the walls (paint, trim color, etc) because we never did anything to that storage space when we moved in. I love everything we’ve done down there so far. One of the biggest changes we’ve done so far. Going down there was like a flashback to 1974!  Hello 2008! Oak colored wood = yuck!!

That’s the latest in the Wilson household. We are getting another big snow storm today, so we are trying to stay warm! Tonight is the annual Christmas party at the athletic director’s house. I’ll let you know how that goes!

A lot of stuff happened lately…first off, the snow update. The storm wasn’t so bad; we got about a foot, but we survived.

It was all very pretty, really

And I became an aunt once again! Peggy gave birth to Avalee Apryl Turner on Friday afternoon. I may be a little biased, but isn’t she adorable!?!?!?

And big brother Zavion was taking pictures of her too…

How cute is that?!  Also, this weekend, while Grant was at work yesterday, I had an urge to bake something.  I wanted to do cookies, but we were out of milk and there was no way I was going to the store. But thanks to Better Homes & Gardens, I found a recipe for a snickerdoodle pie. Ummm….yummm!!! Hello!? A snickerdoodle pie?! I love snickerdoodle cookies. My mom used to always make them this time of year, and I love pie. So whoever decided to combine the two is a genious! It’s really more like a cake filling in a pie crust, with all the yumminess of snickerdoodle cookies mixed in. It is so good! And yes, I did need milk (1/2 cup) to make this, but I ended up finding a can of evaporated milk that I never used at thanksgiving, and my handy Betty Crocker cookbook said I could cut it with with water (Grant has actually told me that before, but I didn’t believe him)…so easy fix! I used a 1/4 cup evaporated and 1/4 cup of water to make up for the missing milk.  And I have to say, the pie turned out delicious!!!

See, the inside looks like a cake–

If you want the recipe, comment and I’ll email it to you.  It’s pretty simple and so good! But before he enjoyed a slice of pie, Grant came home from work and immediately got started on this:

He has taken it upon himself to tear down a wall in our basement. It’s not a structural wall and I’m still not sure why it was ever built in the first place. It sections off a large part of the basement, which we have been using for storage the last 2 years we’ve lived there, and I think the previous owners did too. It’s the only unfinished part of the basement. Even the drop ceiling, which we both hate, just stops in mid-air above this section of the room. Which is both wierd and annoying because why they wouldn’t finish the ceiling is beyond me, and now we have to do it! Arg.  But Grant got a good start and I think it’s going to open the basement up a lot more and we will have more options of where to put our huge sectional instead of where it is now (blocking the fireplace so we can watch tv), and also use part of that space for a new laundry room. Our laundry room doubles as a half bath and you can’t even open the dryer door all the way because you hit the toilet. Ugh. So, I’m sure you’ll be seeing more pictures of how this all develops!

And despite the huge mess, Grant was great and had that Kirby out and cleaned up everything when he was done!  Thanks, Grant!

Tonight we are supposed to get a big Nor-eastern.  I think we could get almost a foot of snow between tonight and tomorrow.  Grant and I are stopping at Blockbuster on the way home tonight so we can watch some movies.  Why can’t this thing wait to come tomorrow night instead?!  But if I need to miss work tomorrow, somehow I think I’ll survive!  But if you don’t hear from me in at least 2 days, send someone to come dig us out!!

Hey. Today’s post is going to be short and sweet, along with a video. Nothing much has been going on lately; just working. Today at work is diversity training, so today’s clip is from The Office, yet again, regarding how they do diversity training…I’ll let you know how mine goes…I’m pretty sure it will be nothing like this:

This entire episode is hilarious! Watch it when you can!

On Friday, Grant and I went to Amy and Ryan’s Christmas party. It was a white elephant party, so I found this hideous travel mug with a pug with exaggerated beatie eyes. Ugh, it was awful. But when it came time for someone to chose the gift we wrapped, people faught over it!!!! Grant and I just couldn’t believe someone wanted such a hideous thing. Oh well! The party was fun and we had a good time.

Ryan and Grant…

And, I’ve been debating on whether to post this or not, but since Grant and I got a treadmill this summer, we’ve both been using it just about every day. It’s been great to be able to work out on our own time and while watching whatever we want on tv (bonus! Taped old episodes of Friends? I think so!) And, well, I figure if people can post their wonderfully pregnant bare bellies on their blogs, I can post my accomplishments as well, right?
Can you make out my soon-to-be six pack?  Lol.
I’m here to pump…you up! Arg!!

Ok, the other day I said I would post a picture of the newly colored bathroom. Well, here it is:
I love love love the color because it’s so light. The other purple was so dark.  Let me know what you think about the browns…the trim is a yummy mahogony color, which Grant stained himself, and the lighter brown around the room matches the browns in the counter and floor tiles. Should I keep the lighter brown, or paint it dark to match the window and door trim? I’d love to hear your opinion, so please leave a comment.

I almost forgot it’s Wednesday! I kept thinking today was Tuesday…glad it’s not! This video is dedicated to Amber…

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving! My favorite thing of the day was that Grant didn’t have to work!! He didn’t have to work that day, but the other days of the long weekend he did, so it was great spending time with him.

Geez, how those summer tans fade quickly!! Anyway, the other great things about the day was that the food turned out great. It was the first time I ever stuffed a turkey all by myself. The first time I ever made a turkey myself, I didn’t stuff it, and the last two years my mom has been visiting so has been able to do the stuffing. It turned out perfect!

That sucker was ready to pop!! Mmmm…so good! Then I made two pies…one for Grant (who grew up on sweet potatoe) and one for me (pumpkin, baby!)

Before we ate all this food, we each went for a run on the treadmill (ya know, so we could eat guilt-free!)

Ok, you got your turkey, your stuffing, greens, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, mashed potatoes, gravy, and rolls.  We pulled out our fine china and parked ourselves in front of the tv to lounge and eat and watch the Lions get creamed.  But by the 3rd quarter, we couldn’t watch any more, so Grant found that The Godfather was on tv and I went right to sleep!! 🙂 He did too, eventually, and then we woke up, got some more, then had some pie. I love this holiday…just a day devoted to eating! Brilliant.

The next day, Grant left with the team to Clarkston (they lost) and I ventured out to do a little bit of shopping. I got some cozy flannel sheets for our bed and a Christmas gift for Grant. I also decided our bathroom needed repainting. We originally painted it purple, which I liked, but have since decided it’s too dark. So I went more lavender and it is so much brighter and nice in there (I’ll post a picture tomorrow). I also decorated our house for Christmas and by the time Grant got home Sunday night, our house looked a bit different from how he left it. Hey, a girl’s gotta keep busy while her man’s on the road!!

As I eat my turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce sandwich (omg, YUM!!) I’m thinking we should cook like this more often!!!
